Greeks do not go to a restaurant with gastronomy in mind, but in order to enjoy the company and have a good time. As a result there is a total lack of pretension: paper tablecloths, no emphasis on presentation, dishes arriving as and when they are ready, etc.
There is usually a bread and cover charge. But the food is good and cheap, and portions tend to be very generous.

There are tavernas everywhere, but you will also see the occasional restaurant (estiatorio), although these are less convivial. It is a difference in style, but not necessarily in quality. You can also eat in an ouzeri (also known as mezedopoli or ouzadiko).
Often the meze (or the more copious pikilia, literally "selection") which accompanies the ouzo is enough for a small meal.
