Indian Cooking

Indian cuisine is delicious.

Mahãbalipuram has a lot of vegetarian and non-vegetarian restaurants. There is also Western cuisine at places like the German Bakery. If you are invited to an Indian family for a meal they will greet you with hands together (namaskar – or namaste in the north). As a gift it is usual to take fruit or confectionery.

In India they never wish you happiness or fortune as it is thought to be something independent of yourself that you have in your own hands. The Indian languages do not have a word for thank you, but you can say shukrya which means “May you prosper!"

In large international restaurants, they will give you a knife, fork and spoon. In smaller restaurants you may just get a spoon for the more liquid dishes. Otherwise Indians eat with their hands, but only the right hand as the left hand is considered impure. In the north, you may see people eating with their whole hand, but in the south it is customary to use just the fingers. You can use breads – nan or chapatti - to help.

When you visit a temple, you will be offered powdered saffron, holy water from the Ganges and sometimes food that has been blessed. This is a symbol of God’s blessing – Prasad – and it would be rude to refuse.
