A trip to India is a fantastic and rewarding experience, but if you are planning to join us there are a few things you need to know – and do - before you go.
This page you should tell you everything you need to know about the health precautions you need to take. As this is medical information you will need to consult your family doctor or a doctor at a health centre for advice, vaccinations, treatment or medicines. They will tell you whether or not the medicines recommended below are suitable in your particular case.
Like all the other countries in the Indian sub-continent, India has many health problems.
There are three reasons for this:
The low per capita income, which is about 50 times lower than in Europe;
The hot climate, which encourages the development and proliferation of germs;
Nota: These precautions do not apply in smart restaurants
You can use a combination of physical and chemical protection.
In the evening (after 17.15) wear long clothes and keep your feet and ankles covered. It is best to treat your clothes with an insecticide based on permethrin ou deltamethrin, or an insect repellent. The latter can also be applied to the skin. You need to apply them regularly – every 4 to 6 hours. (They should not be used on babies of three months or less. The only way to protect babies is to cover the cot with a mosquito net, preferably treated with insecticide).
Apart from these individual protection measures, it is important to take account of the habitat and the environment.
Always drink bottled water – and make sure the top is sealed when you buy it.
In Mahäbalipuram there are several doctors who practise Western medicine and Ayurvedic medicine too. There is also a small Hospital "Suradeep Hospital" at 15, Thirukumam Street, and there is a General Hospital two kilometres out of town on the road to Pondicherry.
This is usually from water or food containing relatively mild bacteria. Prevention is better than cure so it is worth taking certain precautions. But it is also useful to bring certain medicines with you.
The first step is to drink clean slightly salted bottled water to avoid dehydration. Again make sure the top is sealed when you buy it.
You can also take charcoal granules.
If this does not work take Immodium. If this is still not effective then you need to take antibiotics, e.g. Fluroquinolone.
